Sync Your Database Across Devices (iPhone, iPad & Mac)

Syncing keeps your database up to date across your devices. It also ensures that if you lose a device you do not also lose your database and you can restore it to a new device.

Unlike many other password managers, Strongbox gives you control over your data and allows you to choose how you sync your database. This means you need to decide where your database will be stored.

Cloud Storage Providers - Native Integrations

Strongbox integrates natively with the following cloud storage providers:

  • OneDrive
  • Dropbox
  • Google Drive
  • iCloud Drive

This native integration usually results in the most reliable sync. This is the easiest way to sync your database and it's the method that we recommend for most users.

To sync your database using any of the above cloud storage providers on iPhone or iPad:

  1. Tap the + button
  2. Tap New Database
  3. Tap the cloud storage provider of your choice
  4. Sign in to connect the Strongbox app to your cloud storage provider
  5. Select the folder where you want to store your database

To create a new database using any of the above cloud storage providers on Mac:

  1. Open the Database Manager window (click View in the menubar > Database Manager)
  2. Click Add Database...
  3. Click to add the cloud storage provider of your choice

Cloud Storage Providers - Finder/Files App Integration

If the cloud storage provider you want to use is not in the list of native integrations above, it should still be possible to use them to sync your database.

If your cloud storage provider offers an app that creates a sync folder anywhere on your Mac, then it should work with Strongbox. And in order to work with Strongbox on iPhone and iPad, they need to offer an iOS app that integrates with the iOS Files app.

For a list of the cloud storage providers that work best with the Files app on iPhone/iPad, see here.

To set up the sync on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Follow the instructions on Apple's support site to set up your cloud storage provider in the Files app
  2. Tap the + button in the Strongbox app
  3. Tap either New Database or Add Existing
  4. Select Files from the list of Storage locations
  5. Navigate to the location for your database

To set up the sync on your Mac:

  1. Install the app for your cloud storage provider of choice on your Mac
  2. Click Add Database
  3. Click either Create New Database or Add from Files
  4. Navigate to the location for your database

WebDAV and SFTP

Certain providers, such as Nextcloud, support WebDAV or SFTP. When creating a new database or adding an existing database to Strongbox, you can select either WebDAV or STTP as a storage location and follow the on screen instructions to set it up.

WebDAV/SFTP also allows you to sync your database with a self hosted server.
